Here's a good article about how easy it is to get mandrake up and running:

I just installed Mandrake 10 on my XP box and having troubles with sound and networking. I have onboard sound as well as a PCI Sound Blaster Live. I tried and tried to get the sound to work, and nothing works. Now the other complication I am having is that my ethernet card will not connect to my LAN. I've tried to setup the network various times, changed IP addresses, and still nothing. After working all night, ended up staying up all day installing Mandrake 10, uninstalling, then installing Fedora Core 2. Fedora seems to work great with the exception of the sound once again. Anyway Fedora 2 is working great, just had to disable on board sound. Only problem I had when installing was that the bootloader gancked the Windows XP master boot record. Found a fix and no problem.

I guess in my conclusion if you like Mandrake's version of Linux, I would give Fedora Core 2 a look.
